Visitation By Don Basenes

Everyone was busy just like beez cutting their life span, by making more honey. The principal was sweating, the Rector shivering, yet the administrator trying to organize everything together. the oratorians were even working on steps to welcome their visitor from Rome who was on a visit to all Salesian centers in Africa.
Only to be surprised that the visitor was already in the Priest house resting, all plans were just lost, now the welcome ceremony was to be held by the house gate. The St. Teresa Youths brought with them a wonderful dance group that led the ceremony, with junior youths being in charge.

SPORT IS PART OF CURICULAR ACTIVITY AT DBTC

Welcome yet to the fourth edition of Don Bosco magazine. It’s been quite a long time since you last read your local favorite magazine. Well!, Don Bosco Technical College is still offering the same types of sports which include table tennis, volleyball, basket ball and snooker. As for soccer and net ball, the playfields are still under construction. This year has been a poles apart all-together. There has been great competition and entertainment from the first years that joined us in January. Participation in sports is something so virtuous, it helps an individual to realize his/her talent and probably earning a living out of that? Don Bosco has talented young stars who include the likes of Benjamin Emanuel, a table tennis player, Moses Mwamimbe, an expert in basketball and Thabani Zikhali “the snooker master”. Social contact and friendship are created through sport, at school, trainees have benefited a lot from sports. They have also been motivated, their stresses relieved and their minds refreshed hence enabling them to understand their studies. For those willing to join us next year, please come equipped.
We need your talents and skills to build a better institution for the good of our future and our country at large.
Every trainers and the trainees take part including the college Rector. At the present moment, the hall and the conference room are being used to facilitate the sporting activities and soon a basketball and netball pitch which are adjacent the principal’s office will be opened for play, as evidenced by rapid construction of the pitches. One of the trainees was injured during a netball match and the college took great care of her. She had a quick recovery for a short period of time. We always have our sport activities on Wednesday and sometimes during the free time. We also offer sports to the oratory students, led by community volunteers. We would also be glad to be joined by some other teams from our community.

2010 Year of the priest

Do you know that year (June 2009- June 2010) is dedicated to the priests? No sooner had we completed the Year of St. Paul the great missionary and evangelizer than the Pope declared the year 2009 and 2010 as the Year for the Sanctification of the priests. We all know that the Church throughout the ages needs dedicated and holy priests to carry out the 5mission entrusted to us by our Lord Jesus Christ. Actually the Year of St. Paul opened the door to see the image of Priesthood needed in our contemporary world. The Year of the Priest has already started and it runs from June 15 on the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to June 2010 on the same feast in which we entrust our priests and all the faithful to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. During this special year for our priests, the Pope has called the entire Church to see the life of the priest in the light of the Priesthood of Jesus Christ the High Priest who laid his life for others. In this regard the Pope has come up with a theme to guide us as we meditate on priesthood.
The guiding theme is “Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests”. It follows that the Priesthood of Christ is the paradigm upon which every Priest should mould himself and Christians need
to help their Pastors to serve them as Christ did. I am also happy to pin-point that the Year for the Priests is to recall and re-live their ordination event. On the day of ordination every priest is reminded by the Bishop to be faithful to the ministry which they are about to undertake following the path traced out by Jesus Christ the High Priest. Thus, it demands a priest not to neglect his work but to minister the sacraments to the faithful and especially to be at the service of God’s people and strive to be Holy.
It is the year to call to mind that a priest is a human being chosen from among people so as to serve them (Heb 5:1-10). In view of this, St. John Vianney the Patron saint for the Priests said, “A Priest is not a priest for himself only; he is a priest for others”. Therefore if we pray for the sanctification of the church actually we are praying for the sanctification of the Church. Hence we can deduce that the year for the Priests is a year of renewal of the church and a year of grace. It is also true to say that the grace of Priesthood touches upon the church’s mission of Evangelization which requires personal sanctity on the Part of both her Priests and the faithful. In addition to that, Psalm 132:9 states that “Your Priests will be clothed with holiness and your faithful will rejoice”. Indeed the year itself is good news as Priesthood is good news both the priest and the people to whom he is send to serve in the name of Christ and church. In fact we should give thanks to ministerial Priesthood, for the faithful are made aware of their Common Priesthood and they should live it (Eph 4:11-12); the Priest reminds them that they are the people of God and make them able to offer Spiritual Sacrifices (Pt 2:5).
To experience the renewal of our Priesthood either Ministerial of common priesthood and receive God’s grace in this special year I suggest that we can practically do the follow:
I invite all the priests to imitate the zeals of St. John Vianney to be staying in the confess box and administer the sacrament of Penance and to invite the fait to the reception of this sacrament.
To formulate a common prayer to pray for Priest and new vocation to priesthood every Sunday or any suitable. This can be done at the parish level, small Christian communities and associations.
Workshops to be conducted so as to make people know about the Sacrament of Holy orders.
Eucharist, adoration, saying Rosary recommending our Priest to Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary the mother of all the Priests. This can be done at all levels.
To conclude my reflection on the Year for Priest I end up with the words of Jesus from Mt 10:41: “Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward”.
Let us remember that the real enemy of the Church is the one who attacks the Priest and the Eucharist. Hence, let us take this year seriously for the Love of our Church and Priests.

Road To Success

Attaining success is never an easy path as it takes endurance, determination and patience to face challenges. As we meander round the band, tracing the path to success, we discover that I always have choices to make and our attitudes are the determinants of progression or regression on this journey to success.

Novena to Mary Help of Christians

On the 15 May 2009, the Salesian Family will begin the Novena in Honour of Our Lady under the advocation of Mary Help of Christians. The novena aims at preparing the central feast which is celebrated every year on the 24 of May. The occasion of the triumph of the Christians in Lepanto over the enemies of the Church and the liberation of Pope Pious VII from the captivity ordered by Emperor Napoleon made the Church to celebrate the 24 of May as the day of Our Lady Help of Christians.

CHRISTMAS ON EMPTY STOMACH

Our world today, as ever before, desperately needs liberation. Today’s headlines are filled with bad news- recurring wars raging around the globe, famines devastating entire countries, environmental catastrophes, natural and man-made disasters, abject poverty holding entire nations in its grip, violent crimes increasing in spite of man’s efforts to deal with them – the litany of tragedies is endless.
